Hi,
Is there any way to increase touch sensitivity?
On my hardware, it takes a determined touch for anything to register. Dragging is really hard and not smooth at all ( e.g. the slider and dial in the widget demo are unusable - very jerky and requiring repeated backtracking to keep the movement going )
Thanks!

Another observation:
I ran the selftest sketch and after pressing the blue targets, the screen display 4 white dots in the four corners; - if I touch the screen (anywhere) at this point, I get a "touch: FAIL" message !
Could this mean the hardware is defective ?

Sounds like the hardware is working fine - that is the way the selftest is meant to work. Any press outside the dot is a fail.
This is a resistive screen, unlike the capacitive screen on a phone. A touch with a plastic stylus works very well. Loading up the "sketch" demo lets you see touches. Many people find gentle pressure with a fingernail works quite well.

A touch screen pen may be a very good choice if accuracy is what you concern.
