I am developing a Chinese application with FT8xx and needs to display Chinese characters. Read an old thread from several years ago:

Does latest library can handle Chinese font yet?
Chinese has a lots of Characters. If we archive all the character's font into a file and put into SD card, the font file will be very big and it will be slow to load. Also my system do not have a SD Card available. FTDI's application note provide a very good method which allows to pick up some selected characters and create a limited-char font library and load into GPU's memory from flash. An embedded application only used limited characters, this approach I think is very good and I can store these fonts in flash without using SD Card.
I like the GD2/GD3 library very much. It's much easier to develop application with the library. My question for James: Can I use both GD3 library and FTDI's low level function to load selected font? If yes, please offer some advice.
