Is there another, plug n play compatible LCD/TFT Screen that has better viewing angles?
If not looking straight to the display the colors switch and black isn't really black. So I wonder if there is a display on the market which is better quality but can be plugged directly into the Gameduino instead of the original one?
Thx

The short answer is yes but they can prove to be tricky to get hold of. I've been looking into the same thing and found a number of displays which should work, the display connector seems to be fairly standard. However I've not yet found one where the seller is willing to talk to you unless you can show you're thinking of buying a minimum of a few hundred displays at some point in the future.
It's easy enough to look through the display datasheet and check that the pinout matches the one on the gameduino schematic (or post potential options and I'm sure someone will check it if you don't feel comfortable doing that yourself). The only thing you have to look out for is the backlight power requirement, the Gameduino is set for a 40mA backlight, on some displays that will burn the LEDs out after a while. Backlight current is set by R1 (current in mA = 95 / R1) so it's fairly easy to change but does require some soldering.
So far I've managed to try out one alternative and it looks stunning in comparison to the stock one. But then I would hope it looked good, the price was more than the entire gameduino 2.

Hello Andya,
Could you give me the part no of the better display you have found ?
Btw, today i got two newer Gameduinos and the qualitity of the display, mainly the viewing angle, is worse than the older ones I have ...

Beautiful, will try one.
BTW, a big thank you for all your work. I use the GD2 in combination with some Wideband Lambdas in my TVR as a Display and it works flawless, even in the hot car in summer. A very reliable library and hardware !

Yesterday I got the Newhaven Display and it's really a big step forward.
The first Gameduinos I got in March had a good display, but the last ones from July have very bad ones. The NewHaven now is the best.
Why did you change the Displays ? What about offering a Gameduino Version with a better display or offering only the mainboard without display ?

Can the FT800 "drive" an LCD directly (exclude backligth and power) ? Or does it need to be paired with an LCD controller, such as HX8357 ? Will it work with other displays that do not use HX8357? If not, is it the FT800 itself that requires HX8357, or is it the Gameduino software. Can the software be modified to work with other LCDs(that uses other controllers that HX8357) ?
It could be that these questions do not make sense... because I don't completely understand the role of the FT800 compared to the role of the HX8357 on the LCD.
Any links that can explain more would be interesting.

Hi hla,
The FT800 is a combined graphics processor and display controller. So any display with a "raw" RGB works great with the FT800. There is no need for anything like the HX8357.
The Gameduino 2 software layer only requires an FT800. So it will work with anything that has an FT800.

I think I understand. It is a HX8257 that's on the LCD you recommended (not HX8357 which is a controller). An HX8257 is only a driver. It takes raw RGB (and VSYNC/HSYNC, clock etc). The FT800 will work with any LCD that takes raw RGB. As long as the FT800 display timing registers are set according to the LCD used.
Other LCD's (i.e. resolutions) might need some other values in those display timing registers I guess ?
Did I get it more correct this time ?

Yes, that is a good summary!
Bear in mind that the FT800 has a maximum resolution of 512x512, so larger LCDs (e.g. the 800x480 size) will not work.
